Flame retardants are an essential component of many of the materials we all use in our daily lives. They inhibit or slow down the spread of a fire and their presence could mean the difference between a containable fire and the loss of a home or life. Amspec specializes in flame retardants that use chemical reactions in the gas phase to interrupt fires. Brominated compounds undergo thermal degradation in the flame releasing hydrogen bromide which in turn reacts with reactive radicals. The resulting compounds are much less reactive and as a result the fire slows down. Antimony trioxide often works in synergy with halogenated flame retardants.
